NIALL SMITH
344 Bleecker Street
New York, NY 10014
212-255-0660
"I have no computer or fax machine
or even call waiting!" chuckles antique dealer Niall Smith
with a cheerful Irish accent. "This is an antiques shop—I'm
lucky to have a rotary phone!"
He may not boast the latest technology, but Niall displays a
dazzling array of nineteenth-century neoclassical furniture,
including French Empire, English Regency, William IV and Biedermeier,
in his small, jewel-box shop in Greenwich Village, which he
has run since 1970. Niall, who is originally from County Cork
in Ireland, travels to Europe six times a year to find furniture
and objets, including bronzes, Wedgewood basaltware and walking
sticks. How did an Irish boy fall in love with the world of
antiques? "My sister and I were dragged every weekend in
the south of Ireland by my parents to an auction or sale, so
it's in the blood and I enjoy it immensely." |
