Two historical mansions host collections of decorative arts, paintings, drawings, sculpture and furniture highlighting the history of Paris from its origins to present day. The Hôtel Carnavalet, the home of Madame de Sévigné from 1677 to 1696, hosts prehistory to eighteenth-century works while the Hôtel le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau is dedicated to art from the Revolution to present day.

A magnificent hotel particulier—the Hôtel Salé built in 1656 for the general Aubert de Fontenay—hosts hundreds of works by Picasso including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, and drawings. The museum also features limited works by Cézanne and Matisse.
